Ruth Steinfeld, a Holocaust survivor from Ladenburg, was honoured in a public ceremony.
She received the Federal Cross of Merit from the Federal Republic of Germany from the German Consul General, Kai Hennig, in Houston. Ruth has spoken at several Marches of Life in Germany and at the March of Remembrance in Houston, and she is closely connected to the movement. Born in Sinsheim in 1933, she was deported with her family to the Gurs detention camp in the Pyrenees in 1940. There, she was separated from her parents, who were later murdered in Auschwitz.
During a private ceremony following the public presentation of the award, Ruth also received an honour from the March of Life in recognition of her unwavering dedication to fighting antisemitism.
She has spent many years telling her story and working tirelessly to preserve the memory of the Holocaust. During her public address in Houston, she spoke about her numerous trips to Germany, including participating in Marches of Life in Tübingen, Dresden and Berlin.
We congratulate you, dear Ruth, on this high honour and thank you for your unwavering work in the cause of remembrance and reconciliation, as well as for your long-standing friendship.
