In Germany and many other nations, remembrance of the Shoah has become an important part of public culture. But what does remembrance of 6 million murdered Jews mean when Jewish life worldwide is once again threatened by aggressive antisemitism today? What does remembrance mean when synagogues and Jewish institutions must be protected like fortresses and Jews have to be afraid to show their identity in public? What does remembrance mean when Hamas’s antisemitic propaganda, spread millions of times on social media, incites people everywhere to hatred against the largest Jewish community of our time, the State of Israel?
Remembrance means responsibility to get to the bottom of the old antisemitism in our own families, churches, cities, and culture. Remembrance means responsibility to call the new antisemitism—hatred of Israel—by its name. Remembrance means responsibility not to look away and remain silent, but to raise our voices publicly today for Jewish life and for Israel.
This is why the March of Life calls on people worldwide to take to the streets around the Jewish Holocaust Memorial Day Yom HaShoah with the message “Remembrance means Responsibility.”
